Named Lugdunum, it was founded in 43 B.C. as the capital of Gaul. According to this website, http://gofrance.about.com/od/dday/a/romantheaters.htm<BR/>the Roman city was situated on top of the large hill overlooking the present city (mont Fourviere) and arranged around two large theatres, now excavated. Lyon's Musee Gallo-romain has a great website, http://gal.erasme.org/fourviere/accueil/index.html<BR/>though it's in French.
