For all the writers who read this site, I want to direct your attention to a GREAT post on literary agent Nathan Bransford's blog, Ten Commandments for a Happy Writer. The advice is so sane, yet so encouraging. The list is well worth a read and deserves posting on every writer's bulletin board.
I think Commandments #4 and #9 are especially important to keep in mind as we struggle to make sense of our vocation, and I'm working hard on #3 myself.

That's difficult, but I would have to say #3, #7 and #10 are the ones that resonate with me.
I now have those printed off and posted next to my computer :)
Dara, I'm glad you found Nathan's post inspiring. I love his sense of humor as well as his wisdom about what really is important--family, community spirit, perseverance. The thought that chance plays such a large role is comforting and so very true. I guess the best way to approach this business is to work hard but never expect anything--things can change on a dime and nothing is assured. That's why it's so important not to sacrifice your time with family and friends chasing an elusive dream.
